Honestly man, the only thing about Europe that I admire is that they are a bit less overprotective of their young people than Americans. Otherwise though, America is decidedly more free; Europe is largely free of the restrictions that cover everyone under 21 which plagues America, and generally, by age 18, in Europe, you have all adult rights given to you and the infantilization of young people is much less common in Europe.
You can consume alcohol/cigarettes at or before 18 with no problem. Scotland allow you to become an adult legally at age 16, and you wrote many other things.
Honestly, young women are beautiful and I don't get why Americans are instantly triggered (especially older women) when they see a man want a woman under age 25!
You make good points and as a man in his late 20s, I am also against the infantilization of young people in American society.
One thing I would like to point out, however, is that if you look at the Independent Baptists (who tend to be ultraconservative, much moreso than mainstream American society) is that they DEFINITELY do not infantilize their young people.
Again, I would like to quote Pastor Steven L. Anderson and David J. Stewart.
For example, the Independent Baptists are BIG on homeschooling. They are against public schools; they are FOR young marriage.
David J. Stewart got married at age 20, I believe.
Pastor Roger Jimenez (a close friend of Steven Anderson and pastor of Verity Baptist Church) got married at age 18. They are still married to this day!
Pastor Steven Anderson got married at age 19, to his wife (who was 20-21). They have a total of 12 children. The eldest 4 are now adults, with the eldest two (22 and 23) married off. They are still married to this day!
Their eldest son, Solomon, got married at age 22.
The second son, Isaac, got married at age 20 and his wife was only SIXTEEN! A year later, they had their first child.
Their three eldest (all men) all moved out at age 18 and were financially independent and self-supporting by then. Solomon and Isaac are plumbers, while John is a paramedic.
In my humble opinion, the infantilization of young people in American society comes from mainly the Progressives. They want to criminalize and punish truancy, extend compulsory schooling (longer school years/days), impose more age restrictions on young people, and the mainstream media/academia is responsible for promoting the concept of adolescence or the nonsensical idea of brains maturing at age 25.
And women (who are much more Progressive than men) are the worst offenders in my opinion. Most single parents, pediatricians, childcare workers, and schoolteachers are women. YET, they are the ones responsible for much of the infantilization.
- Psychotropic drugs on children (for diagnosis of so-called behavioral disorders)
- If you complain about schools being prisons and the authoritarian school system, women run schools!
- Women (such as Jane Addams) were the ones who pushed the Progressive movement and outlawed child labor, impose compulsory schooling, and created the juvenile justice system.
- The institutions that infantilize the young were made by the Progressive movement and as America became more and more progressive throughout the 20th Century, infantilization got much worse.
I can go on.
Conservatives are less guilty, in my opinion. Just look at the ultraconservative Baptists and you will see that they are against infantilization. In their culture, it is very normal to get married young (by ages 18-22) and to have kids young. They certainly do not frown upon marrying well before your 25th birthday.
